A volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma, within the Canary Islands, has erupted, spewing fountains of lava and ash.
It sits within the Cumbre Vieja nationwide park, and had been secure since 1971.
The island had been on alert for a doable eruption for the previous week – with close by residents being suggested to evacuate.
Canary Islands President Angel Victor Torres informed TVE that no accidents had been reported up to now.
